If only looks could kill - DH Article

Cosmetic advertisements have been throwing around the myth that being 'fair' in complexion is a known benchmark for success in the society. This disturbing cliche of selling their products is true to this day in India. Featured here is an article I had written for DH on this issue. It was published in the June 20, 2006 issue on Page 11.

I agree with all your views on looks could kill.. I've met a lot of very beautiful/handsome people who are dark complexioned. Always wondered if it was our upbringing and the ideas passed on by our previous generation. Or is it, the media, the movies, the ads with people whose teeth are pearly white ???
Thanks for re-kindling these thoughts.

Yeah .. I agree .. It's a shame that the media is basically brainwashing us into what's 'right' and 'beautiful'. We should have our own views of these, no? P'raps, it is the actual surroundings in which a child has grown, how people around him have valued true beauty and stereotypical beauty...
It's nice to know others think this way too.

Thank you for echoing my thoughts Chokri. We need more such active advocates to denounce this ridiculously outrageous trend.
